  • Toranpu

“Playing cards” are called toranpu (トランプ) in Japan.

Toranpu is a Japanese-English word and comes from “trump” of “trump card.”

Playing cards were imported from Portugal to Japan in the 16th century.

Because of this, playing cards used to be called karuta (かるた), which comes from the Portuguese word “carta.”

At the end of the 19th century, Japanese people came to refer to playing cards as toranpu. The reason is believed to be that some Westerners who entered Japan used the word “trump” repeatedly while playing cards, and Japanese people misunderstood the name of the cards as “trump.”
