大晦日
Today is 大晦日 (omisoka), which means new year’s eve.
今日は大晦日です。
“晦日 (misoka)” was originally written as “三十日 (misoka)”, and it meant “the 30th day of a month”.
「晦日」は本来「三十日」と書き、「月の30番目」を意味する言葉でした。
Then, it has come to mean “the last day of a month”.
これが転じて、「月の最後の日」を意味するようになりました。
Furthermore, “the last day of a year” has come to be referred to as “大晦日 (omisoka)” with the letter “大 (o)”, which means “large”.
そして、一年の最後の日のことを、「大」という字を冠して「大晦日」と呼ぶようになりました。
Also, “晦日” can be read as “tsugomori”.
また、「晦日」は「つごもり」とも読みます。
“Tsugomori” is an abbreviation for “月隠り (tsuki-gomori)”, which means “the day that the moon hides”.
「つごもり」は「月が隠れる日」を意味する「月隠り（つきごもり）」が省略されてできた言葉とされています。
